My wife Judy and I started SAGESofBG in 2017 for adults over 50 in the greater Buffalo Grove area. With Zoom meetings we now have members from several other states as well as Canada.
This is a social, discussion and volunteer group for retirees and those contemplating retirement. We met at the Alcott Center through mid-March, 2020 when the governor asked us to shelter in place.
Since the onset of the pandemic Judy and I have been advocating for seniors who are not connected to the internet as well as those needing help to expand their technology know how. This began when our meetings migrated to online Zoom events and we had to help members make that transition. We taught many how to use Zoom and its features.
We also distributed information through neighborhood organizations about volunteer groups such as Buffalo Grove Helping Buffalo Grove. This group still provides free shopping and errand services for older adults.
When vaccinations opened for those 65+ in Illinois, we gathered and distributed information about registering both online and by phone. We also assisted some older adults in getting appointments or transportation.
Now Judy and I have unilaterally launched a two-fold project to continue to fill the needs of both older adults not on the internet as well as those needing additional help and training with technology.
Note: You do not need to be a member of SAGESofBG (although there are no fees to join), nor to live in the area, to visit our website to check resources or to attend a training session.
Our website is an online sources of information and can be found at https://sagesofbg.wordpress.com. Included are a calendar of upcoming events (mainly online), activities and resources.
These include wellness checks and friendly phone visits, discussion groups, etc. to help ease loneliness and isolation for those not on the internet.
Our hope is that someone who knows a senior in need can help relay the information to them. Or older adults call one of us at 708.762.3259 directly so we can explain and answer their questions.
For those with internet access, resources on the web site include activities, online classes and discussion groups as well as free tech support to name just a few.
In addition, Judy and I started online Zoom class to help older adults with their computer, internet and smartphone questions. Please check for scheduling on our Help On The Internet page.
Additionally, one-on-one classes are available by appointment. Click here to view our schedule and to make a convenient appointment.
Once again – you do not need to be a member of SAGESofBG (although there are no fees to join), nor to live in the area, to visit our website to check resources or to attend a training session.
We invite your inquiries or if you would like to help or publicize.
